Isabel-
No idea why I'm doing this... except I enjoyed your piece on hitchhiking.

Every now and again I google my name and hope I'm still anonymous, so my writing you is out of character for me; by default I guess nostalgia played the leading role here... In my youth I hitched all over the country and the world;

I hitched across Australia, across the great Nullarbor Plain, a 2000 mile desert.

In Afghanistan the bus driver refused to give the border guards baksheesh, so we were locked up in the Khyber Pass overnight.

Almost froze to death in Colorado after the rides petered out after midnight and I did jumping jacks to save my life til dawn. Etc.

You couldn't pay me to hitchhike these days, sadly.

So thanks; be good -L
